The category A motorboat driver license entitles you to operate motorboats with an engine output of more than 6 kW and up to 12 passengers on all Swiss and bordering waters. In addition, you are entitled to operate sailboats with more than 15 m² sail area, in engine operation without set sail. The minimum age is 18 years.
You are interested in a category A motorboat driver license? As a former professional wakeboarder, I grew up driving a variety of different motorboats in many different surroundings. In the course of the training to become a motorboat driver I will base my instructions in the safe driving and handling of a motorboat on my over 20 years of experience and knowledge.
RadioNot sure if being a motorboat driver is the thing for you? No problem. The first instruction serves as a trial lesson during which you familiarize yourself with the instruction boat in a relaxed setting and practice using two easy maneuvers. Naturally, we will answer all your questions and discuss the further course of the instruction.
The practical driving instruction consists of individual lessons taught in 90 minute sessions. Over the course of lessons, we teach you all knowledge and necessary maneuvers required to drive a motorboat safely and independently. As preparation for the the practical exam we run a complete knowledge and skills check. On average, 12 to 17 lessons are required before the practical exam.
The Bella 580 C we use for the instruction has an outboard motor and is easy to operate. The cabin is enclosed and heatable for driving lessons year-round in any type of weather.
Do you have your own boat? No problem. We will gladly instruct you on it or familiarizing you with its operation.
Before we can sign you up for the practical exam you must pass the theory exam. The theory exam takes place in Oberrieden at the shipping control. It is a multiple choice exam (duration approx. 45 minutes, 60 questions out of approx. 400 possible, 3 points per question, maximum of 15 error points). Naturally, we will support you with any question you have regarding the theory and we will help you to register for the exam (PDF).
To prepare for the theory exam, we recommend the apps and learning materials of our partner Bootspruefung24. This will make the exam a breeze!
You can take the theory exam before starting with practice lessons, however it is customary to start preparing for the theory exam parallel to taking driving lessons. This way the theory exam will take place a couple of weeks before the desired practical exam. Once the theory exam is passed it is valid for 24 months and entitles you to take the practical exam during that time.
As soon as you have passed the theoretical exam and your driving skills are at the required level, we will sign you up for the practical exam at your request. We accompany you to the exam and prepare you with a warm-up so you can start your exam with a secure feeling with the boat and current weather conditions. The exam begins and ends at the shipping control in Oberrieden or at the lake police in Tiefenbrunnen Zurich. The practical exam takes place in the area with familiar ports. The practical exams takes about 60 minutes.
